Forward Tipping Dumper

At Staffs Operator Training we can offer forward tipping dumper training and testing for CPCS and on our other schemes. The test is currently taken on our 5 tonne straight skip dumper but training is also given on 2 and 9 tonne machines to make sure you get the best possible range of experience. The Novice course duration is 3 days.

CPCS theory test questions and CPCS practical test specification can be found on our CPCS page.

The Forward Tip Dumper category of plant can be found on most construction sites throughout the world and is a very useful category to hold on a CPCS card. Its main purpose is transporting materials from A to B but has other uses as well.  The forward tipping dumper is usually a 4 wheel drive articulating machine with a ‘skip’ on the front and the engine at the back which acts as a counterbalance.

An engine mounted hydraulic pump is used to supply the oil flow to the rams that control the steering and tipping mechanism. Most Forward Tip Dumpers are fitted with a ROPS (Roll Over Protective Structure) to prevent the operator from being crushed if the machine rolls over. They range from between 1 and 10 tonne carrying capacity, any more and the larger rear tip dumper may be required.

Forward Tip Dumpers are usually referred to by their carrying capacity i.e. a 2 tonne dumper does not weigh 2 tonnes, this is its maximum carrying capacity.

Forward Tip Dumpers skip types:

  • Straight Skip
A standard skip that only tips forwards used for general site work.

  • Swivel/Rotating Skip
The dumpers skip can rotate through 180° allowing it to tip either side of the machine. This makes the dumper more maneuverable in tight or confined spaces and allows the dumper to tip whilst driving for back-filling.

  • High Tip Skip
The skip can be raised up vertically allowing the dumper to tip into other skips or objects that would normally be too high. Care should be taken with this mechanism as they are inherently unstable and should only be operated on firm level ground.

  • Throated Skip
The throated skip is for transferring liquids such as concrete as its design allows fluid to be tipped more accurately

Sometimes dumpers have skips with more than one function such as high-tip and rotating. Other uses of the Forward Tip Dumper are for towing items, such as fuel bowsers and trailers over rough terrain.
